Symbiosis Law school Nagpur’s Centre for Taxation Law organised a guest lecture for students of third year on 15 February 2025 from 10:00 A.M onwards. The Guest lecture was based on witness testimony titled “Bridging Truth and Justice: The Role of Witness Testimony in Courts”. The resourced person for the session was Adv. Tufel Sharif, practicing Advocate Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench having field experience of various courts and Tribunals across Maharashtra.

Adv. Tufel Sharif was greeted and felicitated by Dr. Deepti Khubalkar, Deputy Director of Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, who gave the opening remarks for the session. She emphasized in her remarks the importance of witness testimony, which offers personal recollections of events pertinent to a case and it is a vital type of evidence in court proceedings.

The session began with a discussion of the criminal justice administration ecosystem led by Adv. Tufel Sharif.

Establishing an appealing and logical link between the state, society, victims, and the accused. He clarified how the pursuit of justice and the truth are connected by witness evidence, which is essential to the legal system. He clarified that witness statements are used by courts to determine the truth in a dispute.

By offering firsthand recollections or expert opinions, a witness whether an eyewitness to an incident or an authority in a particular field helps to clarify the case. The evaluation also covered several other finer aspects, such as a person’s credibility, hostile witness, human memory, outside influences like stress, and deliberate lying by witnesses. He discussed how the court makes sure that all viewpoints are taken into account before rendering a decision, and reaffirmed the core ideas of justice while concentrating on the sequence of examination, its constraints, and its difficulties. He concluded by closely examining and confirming witness statements and how courts work to maintain justice, making testimony a crucial component of the truth-justice process.

Mr. Aditya Parmar moderated the session, and Mr. Digvijay Nimbalkar proposed a vote of thanks. Both the students are in their sixth semester at SLS, Nagpur. The program was coordinated by Dr. Aarti Kalnawat, faculty in charge of the Centre for Taxation Laws and Madam Namrata Singh. All the participants appreciated the Guest lecture.
