Legal Aid Center

SLS, Nagpur has an active legal aid centre which provides legal aid and advice to people in need. The legal Aid Centre at Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur is  inaugurated on 12th October 2019 by Hon'ble  Justice Shri Sunil Shukre, Judge, Bombay High Court at Nagpur Bench, Nagpur as Chief Guest, Hon'ble Shri Abhay Mantri, Principal District & Session Judge, and President, DLSA Nagpur as Guest of Honour , Shri Dhanajay Kale, Secretary, DLSA, Nagpur, as a guest in the presence of Dr. Sukhvinder  Badan Singh Dari, Director, Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, advocates,  teachers  students, media persons  and other distinguished dignitaries. Since then, Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur is working in association with DLSA. The establishment of the Legal Aid Centre at Symbiosis Law School - Nagpur acknowledges the mission of Symbiosis International University  that it is committed towards fulfilling its ‘Institutional Social Responsibility’. Therefore, the Legal Aid Centre at Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur is established with ‘Aim & Objective’,

Aim And Objective:

• To Provide legal aid, to those who can not afford legal representations through panel of lawyers. For that purpose SLS, has penal of lawyers who are ready to work on pro bono basis.
• To make students more sensitive towards various legal issues that are being faced by the society.
• To enhance the understanding of their moral duties towards the society, which will lead to sense of responsibility in nation building

With the establishment of the legal aid centre, at SLS,Nagpur it conducted  Legal awareness program at  various places, such as Kharbi, Wathoda village, Wathoda School, Police Station, on various social and legal issues. The students have been visiting nearby villages to understand the legal issues which people face and to provide advice.

To enhance the horizon of the legal aid and services to community, Symbiosis Law school, Nagpur visited Kamptee and is in the process of adoption of the Kamptee Taluka to spread legal awareness and legal aid to the needy and poor segment of the community at villages. The Legal Aid Centre aims at fulfilling this purpose and alongside provides a platform to serve the poor and needy. Apart from the student volunteers, alumni of the College, on a pro bono basis, are the part of this mission.

Glimpses of the programs conducted by Legal Aid Centre

1. 30/12/2019: Legal awareness program at Kharbi (16 Students) and faculty in charge regarding solid waste disposal
2. 23/10/2019 : Legal awareness program at Corporation School, Wathoda, Nagpur (Six students and faculty incharge) regarding Right to education also interacted with parents present there.
3. 6th January 2020: Legal awareness program at Nandanvan. (Students and faculty in charge regarding Food Safety Laws and requirements of obtaining licence for selling food on road.
4. 7th January 2020: Legal awareness program at Nandanvan ( Students and faculty in charge regarding Food Safety Laws and requirements of obtaining licence for selling food on road.
5. 4th February: Legal awareness program at Uday Lawn Chowk , Shrikrishna Nagar, Nagpur (10 Students and faculty in charge) regarding Food Safety Laws and requirements of obtaining licence for selling food on road.
6. 5th February: Legal awareness program at Jagnade Chowk Sq., Nagpur (10 Students and faculty in charge) regarding Food Safety Laws and requirements of obtaining licence for selling food on road.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the normal lifestyle of people across the globe and with the vast majority of people under a stay at home order, Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur through its Legal Aid Centre shifted its base to virtual platforms to conduct its community outreach services through legal literacy programs for the benefit of the community. Symbiosis Law school Nagpur organized :
9. Lecture series on Consumer Protection Act, 2019 from 24th May to 26th May, 2021 to spread awareness on consumer rights. Eminent speakers were invited to talk on new consumer protection law, Product liability and Medical Negligience.  Lecture series was organized in the online mode.
10. Legal Aid Centre at Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur in association with an NGO, Aishwarya organized a legal literacy campaign on traffic rules relating to pedestrians in Maharashtra on 18/09/2021. Students of the Legal aid Centre and members of the NGO participated in this drive with zeal and enthusiasm. Students also surveyed the area of Sakarrdara regarding pedestrian rules under the Motor Vehicle Act. A detailed questionnaire was prepared for that purposes.
11. To mark the birth anniversary of Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi, a rally was conducted on 2nd Oct 2021 by Legal Aid Centers of various law colleges under the banner of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Nagpur. Legal Aid Centre of SLS, Nagpur participated in the event.
12. Various community services programs conducted at Tirodi village and Wathoda village.
13. Under Pro bono, Nyaya Bandhu Scheme of Department of Justice, Government of India, Cell has constituted a pro bono club and conducted various programs.
14. Members visited to Khapa village and spread awareness amongst the villagers, handloom weavers and senior citizens about the schemes of government on 1st October, 2022.
15. Awareness rally on save soil and water was organized on 27th January, 2023. Members of the centre visited to central jail, Nagpur to understand the prison rules on 27th Feb, 2023.
16. In association with National Centre of Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, a short term course on disability rights was organized for a week.
